Overview
The Creedmoor Police Department has instituted a Safe Exchange Zone on City Hall property to provide a public space for personal exchanges such as craigslist® and eBay® sales.
Although headlines often emphasize cases in which individuals are scammed or attacked, the vast majority of purchases made via craigslist® or eBay® typically transpire with little or no trouble. In an effort to reduce the likelihood of these types of incidents, the Creedmoor PD decided to create a Safe Exchange Zone.
Location
A sign is posted near Masonic Street in the Police Department parking lot at Creedmoor City Hall to indicate the designated exchange area. The area has video surveillance but is not manned with police. Police Chief Keith King stated, “City Hall houses the police department which has 24/7 staffing, this, along with existing cameras and the newly dedicated Safe Exchange Zone video surveillance camera, will assist in protecting our citizens when meeting with buyers and sellers from online sales contacts.”
The Safe Exchange Zone is accessible at all times of the day and night; however Chief King recommends that citizens arrange their transactions during daylight hours and that they always bring a friend.
